Synopsis

A group of brilliant young scientists stand on the brink of solving the world's environmental crisis, but their ideals are tested when ambitious politicians begin competing for power and control.

As the battle for the future unfolds, The Quest explores integrity, responsibility and hope through comedy, satire and fast-paced theatrical storytelling.

The Prime Minister leads the full company in a chaotic, joyful dance break, a projected newspaper headline reading 'Prime Minister Takes a Tumble' behind them.

Why it worked for LYO

The Quest proved that young performers can tackle sophisticated themes with humour, confidence and clarity. Political satire was balanced with warmth and optimism, while the ensemble writing ensured every performer remained central to the unfolding story.

Audiences responded warmly because beneath the comedy lay genuine hope for the future.

From the Rehearsal Room

Moments the company will remember.

01

Controlled Chaos

One of the highlights of the production was the chaotic Cabinet Scene, where Larry the Cat and Dilly the Dog battled for attention while politicians argued around them in a brilliantly choreographed ensemble. It perfectly captured the opera's comic energy. We brought in a puppeteer to train the cast members operating the animals, and the audience had no trouble finding the political character references!

02

Favourite Dramatic Moment

The Prime Minister leading a full-company dance break became one of the production's most wonderful moments. The PM has just sung ‘Make Me Look Good’(!), and the ensemble groups break free from their individual roles to join this show-stopping moment.

Every ensemble member should remain an active storyteller.

  3. 03

Hope is often a more powerful ending than certainty.

  4. 04

Political and/or complex themes become accessible when grounded in character and humour.

The full company at the climax of the protest scene, fists raised and hand-painted placards held high, a projected image of Big Ben looming behind them.

Every commission begins with a single idea.
